Search Tips
Tip 1: Leave the fields you don't want to search blank. No single field is required for a search.
Tip 2: Use the Quick Search field located on the right corner of the Toolbar to search across all fields.
Tip 3: Word order, case, and punctuation are ignored. For example, Samuel Gompers may be entered Gompers, Samuel.
Tip 4: Keep searches simple and specific. For example, to search for sources on the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad, you only need to enter: railroad.
Tip 5: Try double-checking your spelling before submitting your search.
Tip 6: When using the Advanced Search, try to use the most appropriate term box for your search.
Tip 7: Use 'Select Terms' to see a list of options for that field.
Tip 8: Using Boolean operators: 'And', 'Or', and 'NOT' between keywords will narrow or expand your search results.
Tip 9: When using Advanced Search, begin typing in a field to see matches for your terms.
