1. About the Database

Alexander Street Literature is a comprehensive, cross-searchable package of collections covering literatures of place, race, and gender. Today, Alexander Street Literature features 8 collections and offers over 250,000 pages of poetry, short fiction, and novels. With new content being added on a regular basis, the current package will grow to over 500,000 pages of poetry and prose.

Each database included in Alexander Street Literature has a scholarly editorial board to advise in matters of content selection, to write introductory materials, and to ensure that database functionality meets researchers' needs. The series features hundreds of thousands of pages of in-copyright titles and an extensive selection of rare and previously unpublished material. Users will also find numerous original scholarly essays specially commissioned by Alexander Street Press.

The Alexander Street Literature platform allows users to search across multiple collections in Alexander Street's literature portfolio, thus creating an opportunity for unprecedented comparative research across this wide-ranging body of literature. The following collections are included and cross-searchable: Black Short Fiction and Folklore, Black Women Writers, Caribbean Literature, Irish Women Poets of the Romantic Period, Latin American Women Writers, Latino Literature, Scottish Women Poets of the Romantic Period, and South and Southeast Asian Literature in English.

A related package, Alexander Street Drama, includes Alexander Street’s 6 full-text play collections plus a drama reference database, North American Theatre Online. The plays collections in the package are Asian American Drama, Black Drama, North American Indian Drama, North American Women's Drama, Twentieth Century North American Drama, and the Latino drama in Latino Literature. Now, Alexander Street Literature cross-searches everything in both packages for customers who subscribe to both Alexander Street Drama and Alexander Street Literature.

All materials in the database are protected under U.S. and International Copyright Law. Fair use under the law permits reproduction of single copies for personal research and private use. Further transmission, reproduction, or presentation of protected items requires the written permission of the copyright owners.
