MARC Records

Alexander Street Press provides MARC records for many of our collections. Customer libraries are welcome to download records for use in their online catalogs.

All records are generic in style, prepared to a standard agreed on by an advisory group of customer libraries. Libraries are free to modify the records to meet their in-house standard. Records may also be shared with a customer's cataloging service agency without special permission.

On the MARC records page you will find links to a release schedule, book-level records, and product-level records.

The schedule lists the names of products, their release status, and number of records in the set (numbers in italics are estimates for future releases). Currently we release several new MARC sets each month. Supplemental sets for products that are still in production are also released from time to time. Customers are notified when all relevant releases are made.

"Book-level" records are supplied for the titles of monographs, scores, or recorded works that are included in a specific product. Each record has at least one 856 field link to the full record for that source in the product. Multivolume sets are combined into a single record with multiple 856 links.

Each set of records is prepared independently. Therefore, a customer of two related products may receive two MARC records for the same title - one for each of the products. However, each record will be coded for a different product.

Often there are multiple sets of "book-level" records listed for a single product. Usually the sets must all be selected to capture all the relevant records for a product. Any supplemental sets have the wording "SUPPLEMENT" or "NEW" added to the main product name. For example, we offer a primary set of records for Twentieth Century North American Drama in addition to Twentieth Century North American Drama Supplement 6 MARC records. The combined sets provide access to all plays currently in the product.

"Product-level" records are supplied with a link to the home page of the product. There is no further access to individual items in the product through these MARC records.

Admin Alert: Our Platforms Are Now Updated with HTTPS

This past summer, Alexander Street began supporting HTTPS on its platforms (in addition to HTTP) to strengthen security and privacy of your information.

On January 2, 2018, all Alexander Street platforms will permanently transition from HTTP to HTTPS. Existing HTTP links will redirect to HTTPS when the transition occurs. Organizations that use proxies to access Alexander Street platforms will need to update links and certificates to support HTTPS.

This support article shows how to complete changes in proxy servers and provides answers to common questions. Even if you don't use proxies, you'll want to review and convert links to their HTTPS versions. (Note: Access to your Alexander Street content has not been impacted even if you haven't yet made the switch.)

Links will redirect from HTTP to HTTPS for some time to come, but we encourage you to do this important work today if you haven't already.
